What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus known as SARS-CoV2. About 80% of people have mild symptoms and recover from the disease without the need for hospital treatment; 15% of people develop a serious illness requiring oxygen, and 5% become critically ill and need hospitalization and intensive care. Complications that can lead to death include respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and septic shock, and multiorgan failure, which leads to heart, liver, and kidney damage.
Research: Preclinical studies in a model of pulmonary fibrosis induced with bleomycin have shown a decrease in innate lymphoid cells, as well as markers related to tissue damage. Clinical studies in patients with COVID-19 showed a decrease in the inflammatory parameters evaluated as well as a rapid recovery of respiratory symptoms
